Police adopt technology-driven policing system
DODOMA: DODOMA Police are set to monitor security across the city from a central CCTV command room once the new Class A Police Station is completed.
This move will mark a major shift towards technology-driven policing, aimed at strengthening crime surveillance and improving emergency response.
The new station will be equipped with an advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) security system, including CCTV cameras and a dedicated monitoring centre that will enable officers to observe security situations in real time, coordinate patrols and access video evidence when incidents occur.
The CCTV system will also be integrated with Dodoma City’s wider network of surveillance cameras, expanding the police’s ability to monitor public spaces from a single command centre.
The development emerged during an inspection of the ongoing construction of the main police station and eight threestorey residential blocks for Rank-and-File police officers in the city’s riot-control area.
Dodoma District Commissioner, Mr Jabir Shekimweri said the control room should be designed to provide a conducive working environment for officers, while enabling them to make full use of modern technology in safeguarding public security.
“In today’s world of information and communication technology, we do not need to have many police officers moving around the city conducting patrols. With CCTV cameras, for example, you can conduct surveillance using technology and it provides you with information,” Mr Shekimweri said.
He said the surveillance system would help police monitor public security, improve road safety, manage traffic congestion, support strategic patrol planning and facilitate access to evidence whenever incidents occur.
Police Engineer Gaston Nombo said surveillance technology had also been incorporated into the police housing project, with CCTV cameras planned for the three entrances to the residential area.
He said the new station would have a dedicated monitoring and control room, while its surveillance system would be linked to Dodoma City’s broader CCTV network after the project is completed.
“The integration of CCTV surveillance with police operations is expected to enhance the authorities’ ability to respond swiftly to security incidents while providing a stronger technological foundation for maintaining public order,” Eng Nombo said.
Beyond improving police operations, the projects are expected to enhance working and living conditions for officers through the construction of modern office facilities and residential accommodation, while accelerating the adoption of technology in crime prevention and law enforcement.
Once completed, the command centre is expected to become the hub of Dodoma’s technology-assisted policing, enabling officers to monitor security developments across the city more efficiently and respond more quickly when incidents arise.
