PM trumpets use of AI trichology at World Press Day
ARUSHA: JOURNALISTS in Tanzania have been urged to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool to help them effectively perform their duties, rather than seeing it as a threat to their freedom.
The call was made by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on April 29, 2025, during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, which was held nationally in Arusha.
Majaliwa stated that in today’s world, media outlets face new challenges brought about by technological advancements, with AI playing a significant role in the production and distribution of news.
He noted that the government is working on a special policy on the use of AI, which will provide guidelines for its application in media outlets to ensure that the technology aligns with the principles of press freedom, transparency, and journalistic integrity.
“It is undeniable that AI can be a great asset for journalists, but it can also pose significant challenges if not used wisely. This requires an open debate, solid policies, and close cooperation across all sectors,” Majaliwa said.
He emphasized that the Government of Tanzania recognizes and values the significant contribution of the media in national development. Through media outlets, citizens have been informed about government activities and plans, encouraging public participation in development initiatives.

On his part, the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, emphasized that AI should not hinder the performance of journalists but should be used effectively in carrying out their duties.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, congratulated media leaders for their continued fight for the hopes and aspirations of the people.
