PM hands over 109 houses to Hanang mudslide victims

However, the Premier clarified that such initiatives will not be automatically implemented in all disaster-hit areas

HANANG, MANYARA: Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has handed over 109 houses to victims of the Hanang mudslide disaster, expressing gratitude to local and international stakeholders for their unwavering support.

However, the Premier clarified that such initiatives will not be automatically implemented in all disaster-hit areas.

Speaking at the handover event held in Hanang on Friday, the Prime Minister explained that the decision to build homes in the area was based on research revealing the urgent need for resettlement.

He attributed the initiative’s success to significant financial contributions from both local and international stakeholders.

“I want to emphasize that this does not imply every disaster-affected area will receive new houses. Hanang benefited from substantial support, including contributions from international donors, which enabled us to address the housing needs of the affected families. It’s important to make this distinction clear,” he stated.

The houses, located in Wareti Village, were built through a collaboration involving the government, the Red Cross Society, and the Chama Cha Mapinduzi Women’s Wing (UWT).

The project was initiated following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s visit to the disaster site, where she prioritized the resettlement effort to restore stability and improve the lives of displaced families.

“These homes reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting its people and ensuring they can rebuild their lives after such calamities,” Majaliwa emphasized.

The Prime Minister assured beneficiaries that the houses were constructed to high standards, tailored to Hanang’s geographical conditions, which are prone to heavy rainfall and potential seismic activity.

Majaliwa also urged citizens to take proactive measures in constructing homes and infrastructure in safe areas to minimize the impact of future disasters.

“The Hanang tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness. I encourage all Tanzanians to build in secure locations to safeguard their lives and property,” he said.

The Hanang mudslide, which left many families homeless, prompted a robust response from the government and its partners. Majaliwa expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in disaster management and recovery efforts across the country.

The disaster claimed 89 lives, left many others injured and homeless, and affected more than 500 people in Hanang District, Manyara Region.
