PL survival battle hots up

MBEYA: THE battle for survival in the Mainland Premier League reaches a decisive climax today as Fountain Gate and Tanzania Prisons lock horns at Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya, in the second leg of the relegation promotion playoff.

This fixture will determine which side retains their spot in the top flight and which will have to face Stand United – the winners of the Championship League playoffs – for one last chance at promotion or survival.

The first leg, played last Thursday at the Tanzanite Kwara Stadium in Babati, Manyara, ended in a 1-1 draw.

Fountain Gate took the lead through William Edgar, before Tanzania Prisons equalised via Oscar Mwajanga, leaving everything to play for in today’s return leg.

Speaking ahead of the match, Tanzania Prisons head coach Amani Josiah stressed the high stakes and the determination within his camp to stay in the Premier League.

“Playing in the playoffs is much tougher than the regular league because one team must go through,” said Josiah.

“Nonetheless, we are fully committed to getting the result that will ensure we remain in the Premier League.”

His counterpart, Fountain Gate head coach Mohammad Lizer, acknowledged the tough challenge ahead but remained confident in his team’s preparation.

“The team is in good shape. We know it won’t be an easy game, but we are well prepared to handle any challenges that may arise,” said Lizer.

He added: “We are aiming to win and stay in the Premier League so that our fans in Manyara can continue enjoying topflight football.”

The loser of today’s tie will not face immediate relegation but will instead have to contend with a second playoff against Stand United – who secured their place in the promotion playoff final after defeating Geita Gold 4-2 on aggregate.

The first leg ended in a 2-2 draw before Stand United sealed their spot with a 2-0 victory in the return leg.
