Peace, security top Z’bar govt agenda for 2025/26 FY

ZANZIBAR: PEACE and tranquility are the government’s key priorities in the 2025/2026 fiscal year, the House of Representatives was assured here yesterday.

Minister of State, President’s Office, Regional Administration, Local Governments and Special Departments Masoud Ali Mohammed informed the House that the government is well equipped to maintain peace during the campaign, voting and result announcement in the coming general elections.

Presenting the ministry’s 2025/2026 budget proposal in the House, the minister said the docket has 30 key programmes to implement through the head office, special departments, regional and district offices.

He assured that the ministry through the security committees under the regional and district commissioners are well prepared to guarantee security during the entire period of the general elections.

Other programmes under the proposed budget include construction of modern commuter bus terminal and parking at Mwanakwerekwe dam, development of Hanyegwa Mchana reformatory centre and construction of over 100 Sheha offices in Unguja and Pemba.

The government also plans to enforce and closely coordinate nongovernmental organisations in the islands and enforce cleanness in the country through construction of infrastructure and procurement of equipment to keep the cities clean.

Besides completion of surveys on all areas under special departments, the minister further pledged review of councillors and shehas packages to boost their work morale.

Construction of modern markets at Kibandamaiti in Unguja and Chake Chake in Pemba are underway, said the minister, pledging that the plan is to elevate the new markets to the level of their Jumbi and Mwanakwerekwe counterparts.

He further said the ministry has already ordered 29 modern garbage trucks for distribution to municipal, town council and district authorities to enforce cleanness efforts in Unguja and Pemba.

Minister Masoud assured the house that already the ministry has received two trucks, capable of carrying huge garbage storing containers as well as 30 modern garbage containers, noting that the remaining vehicles will be received within this year.
