PCCB vows tough anti-corruption measures as general election approaches

DAR ES SALAAM: AS Tanzanians prepare for the General Election in October this year, the Director General of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Crispin Chalamila has pledged that the bureau will implement stringent measures to prevent and address all forms and indicators of corruption throughout the electoral process.
He said the bureau is aware of possible attempts from individuals during the election processes and that it is well prepared to face and address all forms of challenges.
The PCCB boss was speaking during the opening of a two-day workshop aimed at strategising on the prevention and fight against corruption in the upcoming election.
Mr Chalamila stressed on the importance of public education, noting that raising awareness about the dangers of corruption remains a critical pillar in the country’s anti-graft efforts.
He stated that PCCB will work closely with different stakeholders to ensure voters, political candidates and election officials understand the legal and moral implications of engaging in corrupt practices.
In a strong appeal to the media, he urged journalists to uphold integrity and avoid all forms of bribery or undue influence during election coverage.

“Journalists have a crucial role in shaping public opinion and ensuring transparency. It is your duty to report accurately, fairly and without bias.” he said.
The workshop, which brought together media professionals, civil society representatives and election stakeholders aimed at reinforcing ethical standards and promote accountability in the electoral environment.
One of the participants, Ms Tausi Mbowe echoed the Director General’s sentiments, stating that as a journalist and editor, she is committed to avoiding any corrupt practices and ensuring her team delivers accurate and balanced election coverage.
“We understand the weight of our responsibility during elections. The public relies on us for credible information and we are determined to fulfil that role diligently,” she said.
The PCCB boss said the workshop marks a proactive step in strengthening institutional cooperation and enhancing transparency in Tanzania’s democratic processes ahead of the 2025 polls.
