RUVUMA: PREVENTION and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in the Ruvuma Region has highlighted achievements attained between July and September this year, noting that efforts to combat corruption have resulted in savings of over 16m/-.
In a statement, released by Ruvuma PCCB Head Mr Hamza Mwenda, the bureau has successfully brought to court suspects who attempted to bribe him with 16m/-, including leaders from Majimaji AMCOS Tunduru and a contractor supplying construction materials for the district hospital in Madiba.
“The accused were found guilty, and the court has ordered them to pay a fine of 13,986,800/-. We managed to save 2,750,000/-in the construction of an emergency building in Tunduru District,” he said.
Furthermore, Mr Mwenda noted that PCCB had successfully monitored the implementation of 18 development projects valued at 6.5bn/-in the region.
These include projects for the construction of classrooms and toilets in primary and secondary schools, as well as infrastructure development for water supply and tarmacked roads.
“During the monitoring of these projects, two projects worth 962,556,000/- were found to have deficiencies and various measures were taken,” he said.
On public awareness, he said over the past three months, PCCB has reached out to the community through seminars, anti-corruption clubs, public meetings, exhibitions and radio programmes to raise awareness.

He also said that during the period, the bureau received more than 98 complaints of which 71 were related to corruption, that have been addressed, while an additional 27 complaints were also resolved.
He said during the period seven cases were filed, all of which are currently proceeding in court of which six of them have resulted in judgments in favour of the prosecution.
Mr Mwenda outlined their expectations for the next three months, from October to December, focusing on continuing to educate the public about corruption and its impacts especially on the upcoming local government elections scheduled this month.
He said, they aim to empower citizens with knowledge to closely monitor the implementation of various development projects to be carried out with high levels of professionalism.
Mr Mwenda further said that PCCB will continue to combat corruption thorough investigations and taking decisive action against those involved, including prosecuting them in court.
“PCCB calls upon the public to actively support the efforts by exposing corruption acts and corrupt individuals and to provide accurate information that will enable to hold accountable all individuals involved in the vice.
