A TOTAL of 57 passengers on Wednesday survived death after a bus they were travelling in overturned at Kitungwa area, Kingolwira ward of Morogoro region.
The bus, with registration number T995 DLB, owned by Al-Sayyed company, was heading to Dar es Salaam from Kilosa District of Morogoro region.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander (RPC), Fortunatus Musulim confirmed the incident, adding that the accident occurred at around 8:40am.
He said the cause of the accident was the negligence of the driver of another bus owned by Ally’s Star Company.
“The accident was caused by the negligence of the Ally’s Star bus’s driver with registration number T947 who overtook other cars without taking precautions…the bus was from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza region,” he underlined.
RPC Muslim further said in efforts to avoid the head-on-collision, the Al-Sayyed bus driver opted to diverge to the roadside where the bus slipped and overturned. The driver ran away after the incident.
According to the commander, the Al-Sayyed bus conductor Seif Omary Mwandagilo (30), a resident of Gairo, has been admitted at the Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital for treatment while other passengers who suffered minor injuries were given first aid at the scene and allowed to continue with their journey aboard another bus.
Moreover, RPC Musilim noted that the Ally’s Star bus driver is being held in Police custody. He used the opportunity to ask drivers to observe road safety rules.
