Parents urged to prioritise diaper hygiene for baby health

DAR ES SALAAM: PARENTS and caregivers have been urged to ensure babies’ diapers are changed regularly to prevent infections associated with prolonged exposure to moisture and dirt.
Speaking during a ceremony to formalise a brand ambassador partnership between Bumpies and Paula Kajala, nutrition and hormone specialist Dr Fatma Juma said improper diaper use could expose children to infections, particularly when soiled diapers are left unchanged for long periods.
She urged parents and caregivers to prioritise hygiene and observe the appropriate time for changing diapers to protect children’s health.
Dr Juma said a child’s diaper should be changed approximately every four hours, while stressing the importance of using safe baby products and following manufacturers’ instructions.
“The major challenge that may arise from improper diaper use is infection. Parents and caregivers should therefore pay close attention to hygiene and ensure children are changed at the right time,” she said.
Meanwhile, Bumpies Marketing Manager Fulgence Lwiza said the company was continuing to work with the government to promote responsible use and disposal of diapers as part of efforts to protect the environment.
He said the initiative aims to discourage the indiscriminate disposal of used diapers, which can end up scattered in the environment and contribute to pollution.
Lwiza said proper disposal of used diapers was an important part of ensuring that childcare practices also support environmental protection.
