PAC thumbs up progress of MSD’s Idofi project

PARLIAMENTARY Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) has expressed satisfaction with progress on the construction of the medical devices and drug factory being constructed by Medical Stores Department (MSD) at Idofi area in Njombe Region.

It has assured full support to ensure the project is accomplished on time for the factory to start operation in July this year as per the initial plan.

“We shall ask the government to make an addition of 12bn/- that will enable the factory to start operation in July this year,” said the committee Vice-Chairperson Mr Japhet Hasunga.

The committee also challenged the MSD board and management team to embark on innovations that will complement President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s determination in bringing development through industrialisation.

“It’s impressive to see that MSD is putting the industrialisation strategy to practice, the committee will provide all the necessary support for effective realisation of this strategy,” he said.

The committee vice chairperson noted the importance of  having a number of factories for the sake of creating more employment opportunities for Tanzanians as well as reducing dependency on importation of  various products.

“Since the project has now reached 70 per cent towards accomplishment, MSD should get support from all the regulatory institutions for the sake of ensuring the factory starts operations soon after completion of the construction work,” he explained further.

For her part, MSD Board Chairperson Rosemary Silaa said they are determined to ensure all the four core activities such as procurement, storage, production and distribution of medicine and medical equipment are well undertaken.

She said upon completion of the construction work the factory will have a capacity to meet 83 per cent of the demand for gloves, and that the board is determined to ensure the project works as planned.

For his part, the MSD Director General Mavere Tukai thanked the committee for touring the project, assuring to work on all the recommendations.
