Over 60,000 pupils enrolled in Standard One in Kagera

KAGERA: AS of January 17, this year, a total of 66,304 pupils had been enrolled for Standard One in Kagera Region, representing a 74.43 per cent enrollment rate.

Kagera Regional Education Officer (REO), Mr Michael Ligola, said that the region had set a target of registering 87,739 pupils for Standard One, including 43,451 boys and 44,288 girls.

“By January 17, a total of 66,304 pupils had enrolled, of this number, 33,550 are boys and 31,754 are girls, which represents a 74.43 per cent enrollment rate,” he said.

Among the districts, Bukoba Municipal Council led the way with 3,534 pupils enrolled out of a target of 3,561, achieving an impressive 99.24 per cent enrollment rate.

Biharamulo Council recorded a performance rate of 80.95 per cent, with 13,182 pupils enrolled out of the targeted 16,284.

Ngara Council followed with 9,878 pupils enrolled out of a target of 12,920, achieving 76.46 per cent.

In Bukoba District Council, 6,786 pupils were registered out of a target of 8,947, representing a 75.85 per cent performance.

Kyerwa Council enrolled 8,998 pupils of the targeted 11,869, resulting in 75.81 per cent performance. Missenyi Council registered 4,630 pupils, achieving 69.45 per cent of the target of 6,667, while Muleba Council recorded 11,494 pupils enrolled, achieving 66.64 per cent of the target of 17,247.

Karagwe Council registered 6,802 pupils out of a target of 10,244, reflecting 66.40 per cent performance. Mr Ligola further revealed that as of January 17, a total of 41,799 pupils had been registered in nursery schools out of the targeted 61,404, representing 68.07 per cent enrollment.

Of those enrolled, 19,530 (64.74 per cent) were boys, and 22,269 (71.29 per cent) were girls. He said 263 students, including 134 boys and 129 girls, were registered through the MEMKWA programme.
