OGTL calls for heightened collaboration in clean energy promotion
DAR ES SALAAM: ORYX Gas Tanzania Limited (OGTL) has called for increased collaboration among private sector stakeholders, organisations and institutions to support the government’s goal of achieving 80 per cent clean energy usage among Tanzanians by 2034.
“Oryx Gas is committed to supporting this goal and welcomes further collaboration with private sector stakeholders, organisations and institutions,” OGTL’’s Acting Managing Director Ashelly Mbasha, stated this over the weekend.
He made the statement in Dar es Salaam when speaking about the envisaged major LPG tank project for Ferry traders in the city.
Dar es salaam City Council and the OGTL are finalising an agreement for implementation of a project to build a major modern LPG tank, worth 300m/-, at the Ferry International Fish Market.
“We request protection for the infrastructure as it is high-value and requires significant security. The project will contribute to a cleaner and safer market environment,” Mr Mbasha said.
The project is expected to enhance clean cooking energy use among the food vendors and traders at the fish market.
On his part, Ilala MP and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Mussa Zungu, said the project aims to provide a significant boost to the market’s operations.
Mr Zungu highlighted that traders, particularly those involved in frying fish at the market, have faced losses due to the inefficient use of gas cylinders.
“We are introducing a large-scale gas tank project. Each trader will have access to their own gas meter, which will ensure more efficient and cost-effective use of gas,” Zungu stated.
“This initiative aligns with President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to environmental conservation, as the use of charcoal and firewood harms our environment. We are fully supporting the President’s efforts.”
He expressed gratitude towards Oryx Gas for their partnership with the Dar es Salaam City Council to provide clean and affordable energy to fish fryers.

He noted that legal agreements are 90 per cent complete, and the project is in line with President Samia’s directive to reduce costs for business operations.
Ilala Municipal Council officials have worked diligently to facilitate the project, including securing the site for the gas tank.
“This project is a significant benefit to traders, the environment and the nation,” Zungu added.
Dar es Salaam Mayor, Mr Omar Kumbilamoto, praised Zungu for his efforts in assisting President Samia and noted that the gas tank project is a result of directives to shift from traditional fuels to gas.
He urged traders to embrace these changes despite the challenges they may face.
Mr Kumbilamoto commended the recent signing of the contract for the gas tank project and stressed the importance of cooperation between traders and Oryx Gas.
“We are committed to transforming the city’s energy usage, aligning with President Samia’s vision of promoting clean energy,” he said.
The Mayor emphasised that the shift to gas is a top priority for the city and he called for continued support and collaboration to ensure the project’s success.
