North Mara mine takes second place in ATE awards

MARA: TWIGA Minerals Corporation’s North Mara mine has been awarded the second-best employer of the year title by the Tanzania Employers Association (ATE) for 2024.

The mine in Tarime, Mara Region, under a joint venture between the government and Barrick gold, bagged the award for the second time in a row.

The Barrick Corporate Communication and Liaison Manager, Ms Georgia Mutagahywa, said during the award presenting ceremony over the weekend that it was a clear testimony that by winning the occupational safety award, the company cared about its employees.

“There is no success without prioritising the safety of our employees and we will always put the safety and interests of our employees first,” she said.

She said that demonstrating how the mining company is running by adhering professionalism and international standards, placing a major emphasis on health and safety, as well as the development of local talents.

All of Barrick’s mines are led by Tanzanians, with 96 per cent of the employees being local. The mine also has a programme to empower female employees and currently, they are working effectively in various departments.

Apart from that best employer award, North Mara has also won other awards in various categories such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Occupational Health and Safety Excellence, Private sector, club of the best performers and local content, another Barrick’s mine Bulyanhulu Mine has also won an award in the category of compliance with regulatory authority.

Barrick and Twiga Mines have also been at the forefront in supporting the government’s efforts to implement projects that bring positive changes to the communities surrounding their mining areas, especially in the sectors of education, health, clean water, and road infrastructure development.

Between 2020 and 2024, Barrick North Mara has invested over 22bn/- in executing 253 community projects.
