TANZANIA Golf Union (TGU) plans to rejuvenate the national golf team to enable the country perform wonders in the continental level competitions.
The effect of the new look Tanzanian team will be seen in Egypt, the venue of All-Africa Golf Challenge in September this year, according to Enock Magile, the Competition Secretary of Tanzania Golf Union.
Magile said Tanzania has already confirmed to send a team of golfers in Egypt.
TGU saw the need to reshape the team after the country finished fourth in the recently staged Africa Region 4 championship at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa in Entebbe, Uganda.
“It was a big lesson, we want to perform better in the regional level event,” he said.
National team Captain Victor Joseph of Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC), Isihaka Daudi (Tanzania People’s Defense Forces-TPDF) Lugalo golf club, and TPC Moshi Club’s Ali Mcharo and George Sembi represented Tanzania in the event whose overall winner was Kenya and hosts Uganda finished second.
He said they expect a new look squad will bring better results due to the recent results obtained from the national-level events.
Magile said that the forthcoming Lugalo CDF Trophy to be held at Lugalo course will give them direction since it will help TGU to have players’ order of merits.
“We have already confirmed to send the team to Egypt for Africa Challenge Trophy, but we want to send a competitive team that can bring us desirable fruits.
“In order to get the best team members, we decided to make some changes in a team selection to insure we crop every available best,” he said.
Magile added that this time around they also plan to prepare the national team in collaboration with National Sports Council (NSC) as they had discussion with the council how to conduct the national team camp.
Since the start of the year, four national-level events have been already played including Lugalo Open won by Isihaka Daudi, Kilimanjaro Open won by Jay Nathwani, while Sembi won Morogoro Open and the latest was Arusha Open won by Nathwani again.
National team captain Joseph managed finished runner up in three events.
The players in the team that played in Region 4 were selected on the 2021 order of merits.
