INADEQUATE preparation has been cited as the main reason behind the poor performance of the netball team in Africa Netball World Cup qualifiers in South Africa.
The Africa Netball World Cup Qualifiers tournament that climaxes today in South Africa started from August 21st this year.
‘’More efforts are needed to reach further since it has been a tough competition that involves many best teams that participated in the Commonwealth games,’’ noted the Chairperson of netball governing body (CHANETA), Devota Marwa.
Marwa said besides many challenges, the players need to improve in both scoring and defending.
Besides Tanzania, other countries which participated in the qualifiers are the hosts South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya and Eswatini.
As a way forward, Marwa said the players need to improve and she called on the netball stakeholders to support the team financially so as to raise the rank.
“We need to have more friendly matches with the top-ranked teams in order build competence and experience to the players,” she added.
She said the team’s players have been picked since 2021, but started to play in the global level tournament this year.
At the start of the event, two African nations had already qualified for next year’s global showpiece, namely South Africa and Uganda.
South Africa qualified on the basis that they are ranked fifth in the world and are hosts as well.
Ten teams were identified to come compete at the qualifiers, however Uganda announced their withdrawal from the competition with a few days left before commencement.
