NEMC, Turkish institutions exchange environmental conservation skills in bid to address challenges

KONYA: OFFICIALS from the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) held discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change of Turkey and various environmental institutions in Konya.

The discussions took place alongside exhibitions showcasing advanced agricultural tools, inputs, and conservation agriculture practices. Participating institutions included the Soil, Water and Desertification Research Institute, the Konya Water and Sewerage Administration, the Konya Metropolitan Municipality Development Project, and Turko.

The primary objective of the engagement was to exchange knowledge and experience in environmental management and conservation, strengthen international collaboration frameworks, and learn best practices for addressing environmental challenges.

Speaking during the meeting, Senior Community Development Officer from NEMC, Suzan Chawe, outlined the council’s mandate. She stated that NEMC is responsible for advising the government on environmental matters and overseeing environmental conservation in accordance with national legislation.

She further noted that the council’s responsibilities include supervising Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) processes, conducting environmental research, ensuring compliance and enforcement of environmental laws, and promoting public awareness on environmental protection.

Additionally, environmental experts from Konya emphasized the role of scientific research across sectors in improving regulatory and policy decision-making, as well as in controlling pollution arising from industrial activities.
