NBC invests in maternal health
MOROGORO: The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal and child health by training 500 midwives by 2028.
The bank also highlighted the importance of financial literacy for healthcare workers.
Speaking at the fifth graduation ceremony of the Morogoro College of Health and Allied Sciences (MCOHAS), NBC Morogoro Branch Manager Deusdedit Mashalla said the initiative aims to address the critical shortage of midwives in the country.
Through its annual Dodoma Marathon, the bank has sponsored the training of 50 in-service midwives. This programme, alongside public education and screenings, has contributed to the detection and treatment of over 1,600 cervical cancer cases.
Mr Mashalla emphasized the bank’s focus on financial literacy for public servants, including healthcare workers. He stressed the correlation between financial well-being and the quality-of-service delivery.
The Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Daniel Nkungu, echoed the importance of financial management for healthcare professionals, warning against the negative impact of financial stress on patient care.
“In addition to understanding your core role in this profession, it’s crucial to prioritize your financial well-being.
“Financial stability directly impacts the quality of care you can provide to patients.,” Dr Nkungu said.

MCOHAS Principal Evarist Urassa urged graduates to prioritise continuous learning to keep pace with evolving healthcare practices and appealed for support to improve the college’s infrastructure.
Mariam Ndabagenga, Relationship Manager of the Benjamin Mkapa Foundation, congratulated the graduates and thanked NBC for its support. She emphasized the importance of the sponsored midwives demonstrating exceptional performance in their roles.
