MARA: THE country has been left in shock following the tragic death of Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) Managing Director, Engineer Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, and his driver, Muhajir Mohamed Haule, in a road crash in Bunda District, Mara Region, yesterday.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM in the Bunda District of the Mara Region.
According to Mara Regional Police Commander, Pius Lutumo, the vehicle carrying Engineer Nyamo-Hanga, a Toyota Land Cruiser, was travelling from Mwanza to Bunda when it reportedly swerved to avoid a cyclist and collided head-on with an oncoming truck.
“The driver tried to avoid hitting a cyclist but lost control, resulting in a head-on collision with a lorry. Both the driver and his boss died at the scene,” Mr Lutumo said.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her profound sorrow at the news.
In a statement released by the Directorate of Presidential Communications, she extended her deepest condolences to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr Doto Biteko, the leadership and staff of TANESCO and the bereaved families, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
“I have received with great sadness the news of the deaths of Engineer Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, Managing Director of TANESCO and his driver, Muhajir Mohamed Haule, who passed away in a road crash early this morning in Bunda District, Mara Region,” President Samia wrote on her social media platforms.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Dr Doto Biteko, all TANESCO staff, relatives and friends. May the Almighty grant them strength, patience and spiritual comfort during this difficult May their souls rest in eternal peace,” she added.

Mara Regional Police Com mander, Pius Lutumo, said the crash occurred at approximately 1:30 pm, when a Toyota Land Cruiser, carrying Engineer Nyamo-Hanga, was travelling from Mwanza to Bunda.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr Doto Biteko, paid a moving tribute to the late Engineer Nyamo-Hanga, lauding him as a dedicated and visionary leader who passed away while actively pursuing his commitment to ensuring reliable electricity for all Tanzanians.
Visibly emotional, Dr Biteko said, “The nation has lost a brilliant and selfless executive. Engineer NyamoHanga was not a leader confined to his of fice; he was consistently in the field, working tirelessly to provide dependable electricity to our people.”
Reflecting on their recent interactions, Dr Biteko recalled that Engineer Nyamo-Hanga had been in Dodoma just the day before, participating in TANESCO board meetings focused on strengthening the nation’s power supply.
“Death is truly a mystery. Just yesterday, he was with us, contributing passionately to discussions on strengthening electricity access. Today, he is gone. We have lost a compassionate, hardworking and visionary leader,” he said.
Dr Biteko praised Eng Nyamo-Hanga as one of the few ex ecutives who not only demanded performance but also fostered teamwork and unity across the organisation. “He was never selfish.
He led with humility and always had a vision of a Tanzania where every citizen enjoys electricity without hardship.
His passing is not only a loss to TANESCO but to the entire nation,” he added.
“But now, what can we do? It is God’s will.” He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the staff of TANESCO and all friends, colleagues and relatives of both Eng Nyamo-Hanga and his driver, Mr Muhajiri Mohamed Haule.
“I pray that the Almighty grants strength, comfort and patience to their families during this difficult time. May their souls rest in eternal peace. Amen,” Dr Biteko concluded.
Earlier yesterday, the TANESCO Board of Directors announced with deep sorrow the tragic passing of Eng Nyamo-Hanga and his driver following a road accident in Bunda District, Mara Region.
In a statement, the board expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families, the government, TANESCO employees and all Tanzanians mourning the loss. TANESCO’s Mara Regional Manager, Nickson Babu, confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Bunda District Hospital, where arrangements are being made for further procedures.
Eng Nyamo-Hanga is being remembered as a dedicated public servant and visionary leader in Tanzania’s energy sector.
His sudden passing is a significant loss not only to TANESCO but to the entire nation, as he played a vital role in expanding access to electricity and improving energy infrastructure across the country.
Eng Nyamo-Hanga, who was appointed Managing Director of TANESCO on September 23, 2023, by President Samia, succeeding Mr Maharage Chande.
