Nape advocates enhanced collaboration for advancing digital transformation in Tanzania

SOUTH AFRICA Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology Mr Nape Nnauye, has urged that there is need for more cooperation for improving people’s lives with Information Communication Technologies (ICT).

He made the remark on the sidelines of the Africom in Cape Town, the largest African ICT event that saw a media premiere of a documentary featuring the efforts of connecting Mount Kilimanjaro with high-speed internet.

“Collaborating is an important aspect if we want to achieve our goals,” the minister also made his point at the ministerial forum themed “Building a Future-Oriented, Digital Infrastructure”, co-hosted by the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) of South Africa.

On the point of cooperation in the ICT field, the minister made the opening of the high-speed internet on the Mount Kilimanjaro on December 13th, 2022, as a symbolic case.

As a part of the national ICT broadband backbone network project, the network was rolled out by Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) with support from Huawei.

The move means climbers can access the Internet while scaling the mountain, as high as 5,985 meters above sea level, at Uhuru Peak.

The minister thanked TTCL’s initiative to connect Mount Kilimanjaro, and praised Huawei’s support by calling the company a reliable partner.

Speaking at the premiere of the documentary, entitled “A Call from Kilimanjaro”, ,Director General, National ICT Broadband Backbone of Tanzania , Mr Abdul Athumani Mombokaleo, said; “The documentary we are about to unveil captures the journey of bringing high-speed internet to this remote location. It’s not just about connectivity, it’s about bridging gaps, fostering communication, ensuring safety for climbers, and empowering the community around the Mountain,”

He added: “Huawei’s expertise and dedication to pushing the boundaries of technological advancement have played a pivotal role in this imitative…Their commitment to building a connected world aligns seamlessly with our vision at TTCL, and together we have overcome challenges to bring the benefits of high-speed internet to the roof of Africa.”

Vice President of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa Region, Mr  Wan Wei expressed the commitment to contribute more to Tanzania’s digital transformation.

“The efforts and the achievements made by Tanzania in developing the digital economy in the country are the broader context of the documentary. Huawei is always ready and willing to connect the unconnected, connect the people with opportunities, and connect local communities with a sustainable future,” Wan said.

He said that Tanzania is on track to achieving its digital transformation goals. The country is recognized by the World Bank, on its GovTech Maturity Index, as one of the global leaders in public sector digital transformation.

It means Tanzania has been using innovative digital solutions and demonstrating good practices in core government systems development, public service delivery, and citizen engagement.

To continue this progressing momentum, Minister Nape reaffirmed the Tanzanian government’s commitment to ensure the improvement of Tanzanian people’s lives with ICT technology in fields such as agriculture, health, government services, and so on.
