Mzumbe University launches hepatitis B vaccination for its staff   

MOROGORO: MZUMBE University has officially launched a Hepatitis B vaccination campaign targeting staff across all its campuses, as part of its ongoing efforts to protect the health and well-being of its workforce.

Speaking at the launch event held at the university’s main campus in Morogoro, Vice Chancellor Prof. William Mwegoha said the vaccination campaign is aimed at protecting staff from Hepatitis B, one of the world’s most dangerous and deadly infectious diseases.

“This initiative is part of the university’s long-term strategic plan to prioritize employee health, while also improving the working and learning environment,” said Prof. Mwegoha.

“Health is wealth; without good health, one cannot achieve work-related or personal development goals. The university values its human resources, which is why we have decided to implement this vaccination program.”

Prof. Mwegoha emphasized that Hepatitis B is a serious disease that can negatively impact lives and workplace productivity, urging all university staff to take part in the campaign. He also highlighted that the university is covering the full cost of the vaccinations for its employees.

On his part, Dr. Nyangara Mtilly, Director of Health and Medical Services at the university, said the vaccination process begins with a health screening before the first dose is administered. He explained that Hepatitis B vaccines are given in three doses for adults to ensure full protection, while newborns receive the vaccine immediately after birth.

Further elaborating on the disease, Dr. Mohamed Ayub, a medical expert at the university’s health centre, explained the types of Hepatitis, modes of transmission, and prevention methods. He stressed the importance of early testing and vaccination as a safe and effective way to protect oneself and manage the disease.

Several university staff members who received the vaccine expressed their gratitude to the university leadership for initiating the program. Tekla Francis, one of the vaccinated staff, said:

“We thank the university management for bringing this service directly to our workplace. Many of us were unaware of how dangerous this disease is, but now we are informed and protected.”

The campaign marks a significant step in Mzumbe University’s health and wellness strategy, reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its staff as a cornerstone of institutional growth and efficiency.
