PRESIDENT Hussein Mwinyi has told Chinese investors that there are still many opportunities to invest in fishing, conference tourism and tourism- the main sector which contributes about 30 per cent to the Islands’ gross domestic product (GDP).
Speaking with the Chinese Railway Construction and Investment Company delegation of seven members visiting him at Zanzibar State House, on Thursday, Dr Mwinyi further invited the investors to look for other various development opportunities in the country.

Dr Mwinyi further said that Zanzibar is a tourist island with many attractions at the beaches including hosting the famous Stone Town heritage site, which primarily receives more visitors from Europe led by Italy.
“We welcome the Chinese companies and other investors to use the available opportunity.
Zanzibar still needs modern hotels to attract high class tourists,” he pointed out, adding that it is also an opportunity for the investors to build more several multipurpose modern conference tourism halls.
The President also talked about tapping opportunities in the fishing industry, noting that the sector of the blue economy can contribute to individual and country’s economy growth.
He added: “We need to develop it, particularly empowering fishers to catch fish in deep sea areas.”
In a related development, he encouraged fish farming in the island to boost fish catch, local consumption and processing for export, saying: “Don’t forget Zanzibar still needs support in developing infrastructures including the airports, seaports and roads, crucial in achieving development goals.”
In response the head of the delegation, Mr Hao Ping Dong said: “We are already interested in investing in some areas in Zanzibar and equally express our satisfaction at the good climate of doing business in the island. The reception for visitors is exemplary and we promise to strengthen good relations between our company and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.”
