ZANZIBAR: President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has issued a stern warning against divisive politics, urging leaders and citizens alike to reject rhetoric that could threaten national unity.
Addressing Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) local leaders in both Unguja Urban-West and Unguja North regions, Dr Mwinyi emphasised the importance of civil discourse and mutual respect in political engagements.
“No one should be allowed to divide the country,” Dr Mwinyi said. “Politicians, especially in the opposition, must focus on promoting their policies and fostering unity. Personal attacks and baseless allegations have no place in our politics. We must all work towards building a unified and respectful society.”
As CCM’s national deputy chairman for Zanzibar, Dr Mwinyi also advised party members to remain steadfast in their commitment to clean politics.
He cautioned against falling into the traps of discrimination and hatred that marked the political landscape in recent years.
“Our priority must be to maintain peace and stability, which are crucial for our country’s development,” he added.
In discussing development, Dr Mwinyi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing Zanzibar’s infrastructure and services.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare, including a major renovation project for the Mnazi Mmoja referral hospital, supported by development partners.
Additionally, he announced a compensation allocation of over 12bn/- for residents displaced by the Mangapwani multipurpose seaport project in Unguja North.

Turning to the upcoming General Election, Dr Mwinyi urged CCM supporters to register in the Permanent Voters Register (PVR), emphasising the need for broad voter participation.
“Everyone must be included in the electoral process,” he said, directing party committees to spearhead civic education initiatives to ensure a strong turnout and secure a historic victory for CCM.
PVR update in Tanzania is currently underway. The exercise began smoothly and here in Zanzibar the aim is to register over 219,000 new voters. This update is crucial as it prepares the country for the upcoming general elections in 2025.
Dr Mwinyi’s leadership was commended by various leaders, including CCM Chairman for the North Unguja Region, Mr Ali Ame who praised the progress achieved under the current administration, particularly in education, infrastructure, water and health.
Regional Commissioner for Unguja North, Mr Rashid Hadid Rashid, highlighted the President’s commitment to serving all citizens, irrespective of political affiliation.
CCM Deputy Secretary General-Zanzibar, Dr Mohammed Said Dimwa, echoed the call for a focus on constructive politics, urging party members to disregard opposition propaganda that he viewed as detrimental to national progress.
Dr Mwinyi has been a vocal advocate for clean politics and good governance. Since taking office in November 2020, he has emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability and unity in his administration.
