Mwinyi to represent Samia at NAM 65th anniversary
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi, is scheduled to travel to Belgrade, Serbia, to represent President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan at a high-level meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
According to a press release issued yesterday by Zanzibar State House, the commemorative meeting will be held from August 31 to September 1 at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade.
The meeting will bring together delegations from NAM member states to reflect on the Movement’s history and legacy, as well as the continued relevance of its principles in the changing global political and economic environment.
Tanzania is also expected to deliver its national statement during the commemorative meeting.
The first NAM Conference was held in Belgrade in 1961, laying the foundation for the Movement, which has since served as an important platform for cooperation among developing countries and other nations.
The press release notes that Tanzania’s founding President, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, was among the prominent voices who contributed to advancing NAM’s principles and objectives, particularly in promoting national independence, self-determination, equality, peace, solidarity and international cooperation.
As part of his programme in Serbia, President Mwinyi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vuči . During the meeting, President Mwinyi is expected to deliver a message from President Samia to her Serbian counterpart.
The talks are expected to provide an opportunity for Tanzania and Serbia to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
According to the State House statement, discussions are expected to focus particularly on trade and investment, agriculture, tourism and the Blue Economy, among other areas.
President Mwinyi is also expected to engage with Serbian investors as Tanzania seeks to broaden commercial relations and identify new opportunities for trade and investment cooperation between the two countries.
