Mwinyi stresses religious teachings to fight moral decay

ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Mwinyi has reiterated his call on parents and other members of the public to ensure children are nurtured on the basis of religious teachings, to reduce growing immoral behavior in the society.

Dr Mwinyi made the remarks when he attended and graced Children’s Quran Recitation Competition and Award ceremony held here on Thursday.

He argued that proper upbringing of children can help to avoid having irresponsible, dishonest and corrupt citizens, including executives in public offices.

The Children’s Quran Recitation Competition and Award giving organized by the Public Service Media-Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) was sponsored by the Mufti’s Office and the People’s Bank of Zanzibar (PBZ).

Dr Mwinyi commended all the winners, parents and teachers for preparing the children to participate in the competition.

He encouraged the community to continue building the capacity of young people to build a society with good morals and the fear of God.

He said that there has been a decline in morals and the loss of traditions and customs of Zanzibari, saying “We can try to restore them by teaching our children religion and culture. It is one way of producing better future leaders, including clerics.”

The winner was awarded a car, second winner received a motorbike (bodaboda) and the third was given 2m/-, while each child in the top five list received1m/- from President Mwinyi.

The Minister of State- President’s Office (Constitution, Legal Affairs, Public Service and Good Governance) Mr Haroun Ali Suleiman praised the efforts by President Mwinyi in supporting the development of children.

He said from the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, Dr Mwinyi has successfully hosted Iftar within all the regions of Unguja and Pemba, and that people were impressed by his mingling with local people during Iftar and mass prayers.

The Director of Banking Services at the People’s Bank of Zanzibar (PBZ), Mr Said Muhamed Said, informed the audience that the bank remains committed to supporting community activities and that it is among its corporate social responsibility.

Mr Salum Ramadhan Abdalla Shaaban-Acting Director of the Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) which organized the Quran competition with blessings from the Isles Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, thanked the president and all sponsors.
