Mwinyi launches committee to oversee madrassa

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has launched a new National Committee to oversee and improve madrassa (Quran Schools) education across the islands.

The committee was inaugurated this week, during a special Islamic New Year celebration (1447 Hijri) hosted at the Office of the Chief Mufti of Zanzibar, in Mazizini area, Urban West Region.

Speaking at the event, President Mwinyi mentioned longstanding challenges facing madrassa institutions, including poor learning conditions and the difficult working environment for madrassa teachers.

“Let us hope that the new committee will design effective strategies to address these issues and promote quality Islamic education,” Dr Mwinyi said adding that all religions have been playing a big role in nurturing children and promoting discipline and good behaviours.

Dr Mwinyi urged the committee to develop a comprehensive plan that includes clear budgeting and implementation mechanisms, saying that the government is ready to support the initiative but awaits the committee’s roadmap to determine appropriate contributions and funding strategies.
