Mwinyi: Investing in human capital key to Zanzibar’s growth
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to expanding infrastructure and investing in human capital as essential drivers for accelerating economic growth.
The statement was delivered on his behalf by Second VicePresident Hemed Suleiman Abdulla during the opening of the 4th Human Capital Investment Conference in Unguja.
Dr Mwinyi said that human capital is crucial in development and is a top priority to foster technological innovation, improve public services, stimulate business growth and equip youth with the skills and confidence needed to innovate.
“It is crucial to embrace global technological advancements to enhance public sector efficiency and reduce the costof-service delivery,” he said.
President Mwinyi further said the government will continue to make efforts to create an enabling environment for human capital investment and innovation. He also acknowledged the important roles of non-governmental organisations, banks and telecommunication companies in supporting this agenda.
Deputy Minister in the President’s Office for Finance and Planning, Mr Juma Makungu Juma, said that the conference underscores the government’s goal of bridging gaps between the public and private sectors to promote growth driven by innovation and digital transformation.
He added, “The government is focused on encouraging youth to pursue self-employment through innovation, rather than waiting for government jobs.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of State (Public Service and Good Governance), Ms Mansura Mosi Kassim noted ongoing reforms in public service delivery through digital systems, which have already been adopted by several institutions. She urged young people to embrace technology and digital solutions.
Chairman of the Zanzibar Research Centre for SocioEconomic and Policy Analysis (ZRCP), Professor Mohammed Hafidh, expressed gratitude for the government’s continued support, noting it enables the institution to contribute effectively to socio-economic development.
He said ZRCP is expanding programmes aimed at empowering youth with knowledge and skills to achieve their goals.
