ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi has assured members of the Tanzanian diaspora that the government values their contribution in promoting the country internationally and investing in Tanzania, which supports tourism and attracts foreign capital.
President Mwinyi made the remarks yesterday while addressing the Tanzanian diaspora community in the United Kingdom at the Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington, London, on Sunday.
“I want to assure you that the government stands with you and is committed to addressing the challenges facing the diaspora in the interest of national development,” said Dr Mwinyi.
He urged diaspora members to continue investing in Tanzania across various sectors, including Zanzibar’s Islamic bond initiative (SUKUK).
The President also stated that the Government is keen to engage skilled professionals living abroad to return and contribute to Zanzibar and Tanzania’s development.
In addition, Dr Mwinyi highlighted the importance of preserving Tanzanian culture, traditions and values among the youth, discouraging the unchecked adoption of foreign customs.
As part of his UK engagement, Dr Mwinyi officially launched the Tanzania Link Portal, a dedicated website by the Tanzanian High Commission in the UK.
The portal is designed to share opportunities related to business, investment, scholarships for higher education and employment.
Earlier, the Executive Director of the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA), Mr Saleh Saad Mohamed and the Director General of the Zanzibar Housing Corporation (ZHC), Mr Sultan Said Suleiman, briefed diaspora members and potential investors on the investment opportunities available in Zanzibar, encouraging them to seize these prospects.

President Mwinyi arrived in the United Kingdom on Sunday and met with former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair.
During their meeting, Dr Mwinyi expressed his appreciation for Blair’s support across various sectors, including the development of Zanzibar’s seaport, tourism industry and capacity-building of the Presidential Delivery Bureau (PDB).
According to a press release from the Zanzibar State House’s Communication Department, the meeting took place at Blair’s residence, The South Pavilion, Cotton Underwood, Aylesbury, London.
Dr Mwinyi also assured the former Prime Minister that the upcoming general election will be conducted peacefully and transparently, in keeping with the principles of the Zanzibar Government of National Unity (GNU).
In response, Sir Tony Blair, who is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), pledged continued support to Zanzibar, particularly in areas of digital economy, tourism, and investment.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of State in the President’s Office for Finance and Planning, Dr Saada Mkuya, Tanzania’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mr Mbelwa Kairuki and Ambassador John Ulanga, Director of Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation
