Mwinyi bids farewell to Chinese medical team

ZANZIBAR: PRESIDENT Hussein Mwinyi and the leadership of Zanzibar Ministry of Health have bid farewell to a team of Chinese medical personnel which had been serving Zanzibaris for one-year as part of the bilateral ties between two sides.

The reception held at the State House, was attended by several dignitaries including the Minister of Health Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui, senior executives from the health ministry, and officers from the Chinese consulate in Zanzibar.

“I would like, on behalf of the Revolutionary government and the people of Tanzania, to extend our sincere appreciation to the people and government of China for the ongoing cooperation and provision of support in various sectors,” Dr Mwinyi said.

He said Zanzibar has been benefiting a lot from China in various sectors of development including health, with the annual arrival of Chinese doctors to serve in the country, “Our people get medical care while our local health workers get the opportunity to learn from the Chinese experts.”

Dr Mwinyi explained that his government has been improving health infrastructures such as constructing new hospital buildings in all districts of Unguja and Pemba and purchase of modern medical equipment and engaging the private sector by outsourcing some of the operations like medical lab, for increased efficiency.

In addition, Dr Mwinyi expressed gratitude to the Chinese medical team comprising 32 doctors for the work they have done in   serving Zanzibaris.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Health Mazrui said “Our six decades of bilateral relation with China has been good for the people of Zanzibar. We look forward for continued support of China in the health sector.”

The Acting Principal Secretary- Ministry of Health Dr Amour Suleiman Mohammed said the team of expert doctors from China arrived in the country on September 26, 2022 and are now preparing to leave for home by the end of this month.

He said the team provided medical services to the citizens in Unguja and Pemba Islands in treatment of different health complications including eyes, teeth, urine, kidney, X-ray services, and also performed surgery for more than 50 patients who had different diseases.

The team leader Dr Zhao Xiaojun thanked the Zanzibar government for the cooperation it showed throughout the time they have been in islands   noting “Zanzibar is a good place because people are kind, friendly and love peace.”

He also thanked the local medical doctors in Zanzibar for their cooperation, “We will always remember Zanzibar as regards its attractive green environment, nice beaches and the hospitality of its people.”
