Mwanza: Police rescue two abducted students

MWANZA: POLICE in Mwanza have rescued two students from Blessing Modern School who were abducted while being transported to school on a school bus.
The students, identified as Magreth Juma (8) and Fortunata Mwakalebela (5), were found alive in a house in Nyegezi, Ilemela District.
Mwanza Regional Police Commander Wilbrod Mutafungwa confirmed the rescue, stating that two suspects were killed in a police operation after attempting to attack officers with machetes, iron rods, and a dagger.
“Our intelligence led us to a house in Nyaburogoya Street, where the children were held. When officers arrived, two men armed with machetes, iron rods, and a dagger attempted to resist arrest. Police were forced to use live ammunition, killing both suspects and rescuing the children unharmed,” he said.

He also added that, the students were taken to the hospital for medical check-ups, and police have launched a manhunt for other suspects involved in the abduction.
“The Mwanza Regional Police Force is fed up with criminal activities and abductions. We will not tolerate such incidents in our region, and we are dealing with them with full force because we have had enough,” he declared.
Meanwhile, Nyegezi Ward Councilor Ms Edith Mudogo called on local leaders to report new tenants to authorities to enhance security.
The abduction took place on February 5, 2025, at around 6:30 AM in the Capri Point area of Nyamagana District while the students were on their way to school.
