Mwanza plants 12,758 trees on Dr Samia’s birthday

MWANZA: MWANZA Region, in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), has planted 12,758 trees to support President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s decision to celebrate her birthday by planting trees.

The move aims to conserve the environment and protect the planet while leaving a legacy for future generations.

The announcement was made today, January 27, 2026, by Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Said Mtanda, after participating in the planting of over 1,200 trees at the New Kakebe-Igoma Secondary School in Nyamagana District. The tree-planting drive began at the office of the Ilemela District Commissioner and concluded at the school.

“Mwanza Region has joined the President in community service by planting fruit trees, which helps ensure better nutrition for future children and also contributes to environmental conservation,” said Mtanda.

The Regional Commissioner urged citizens to plant trees on farms and in residential areas, not only as tree planting but also as a spiritual offering to God and as a way to build a greener nation.

“Environmental conservation is a patriotic duty. A healthy environment creates better lives. If society preserves it well, we will have sufficient rainfall. I urge all citizens to plant trees in their homes,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nyamagana District Commissioner Amina Makilagi said that planting trees at the school has encouraged tree planting in other areas, including homes. She emphasized that fruit trees are intended not just to provide shade but also to improve nutrition.

Makilagi also thanked the government for providing project funds and noted that planting trees at Kakebe School will relieve students from the hardship of walking more than 5 kilometers from Shamaliwa to Igoma.

The Regional Commissioner also initiated a fundraising drive of TZS 1,800,000 to connect electricity and water to the school. So far, TZS 1,350,800 has been raised, with the TANESCO Manager instructed to supply electricity immediately and water to follow in coordination with the Mwanza City Director.
