MARA: RESIDENTS of Kataryo Village in Tegeruka Ward, Musoma Rural Constituency, are mobilising resources to build a new secondary school to enhance access to education in their area.
The construction of this new school aims to address the challenge of long distances that students currently face.
At present, students must walk approximately five kilometres to reach the nearest secondary school in Tegeruka Village.
The new project is also intended to improve secondary education infrastructure, align with changes in the national education system and reduce classroom overcrowding.
In a statement released over the weekend, Musoma Rural Member of Parliament Professor Sospeter Muhongo announced that the school will be constructed by the villagers, who are in the process of acquiring land for the project.
“The villagers are working with the Musoma District Council to secure ownership documents for the land where the secondary school will be built,” Prof Muhongo said.
He added that by the end of the month, all land-related matters are expected to be resolved, a construction committee will be formed and contributions for the project will start being collected.
Furthermore, the MP plans to organise a fundraising event for the school’s construction before September 30, 2024, with construction slated to begin immediately following the event.
Professor Mhongo called on education stakeholders and local residents to contribute to the school’s construction.
Once completed, the new school will provide the Tegeruka Ward—which includes the villages of Mayani, Kataryo and Tegeruka—with two secondary schools.

During a recent meeting with villagers, the MP also addressed various concerns, including the lack of water.
He assured residents that this issue would soon be resolved, as the contractor responsible for the water supply network from Lake Victoria will be receiving funds to complete the work.
