Museveni pays tribute to Mwl Nyerere, thanks Tanzania for supporting Uganda’s liberation struggle

KAMPALA: UGANDAN President, Yoweri Museveni, has expressed gratitude to Tanzania and paid tribute to the late founding President Julius Nyerere for their contribution in supporting Uganda’s liberation struggle and laying the foundation for the development of the country’s military forces.

Museveni made the remarks on May 12, 2026, while speaking at his inauguration ceremony held in Kampala. He said Tanzania played a significant role in strengthening Uganda’s development and stability since the liberation period.

He noted that the achievements currently seen in Uganda, including the strength of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), were built on a foundation established with the support of Mwalimu Nyerere and cooperation from Tanzania.

In his speech, Museveni also acknowledged the presence of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the ceremony, urging Ugandans not to forget Tanzania’s contribution to the country’s progress.

Additionally, Museveni commended Mozambique for its historical role in supporting Uganda’s liberation struggle, stating that the country helped build Uganda’s military capacity. He also welcomed the new President of Mozambique, who attended the inauguration ceremony.
