DAR ES SALAAM: FOR the first time, the Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila has successfully performed surgery to remove a tumor from a patient’s lung using a modern, minimally invasive technique.
The procedure was carried out today by local specialist surgeons from both Muhimbili Hospital (Upanga) and Muhimbili-Mloganzila.
Speaking after the operation, the Head of the Surgery Department, Dr. Eric Muhumba, said this type of surgery offers several advantages compared to traditional methods.
“This technique helps reduce pain during and after surgery, shortens the patient’s hospital stay, especially in the intensive care unit, and avoids large wounds and scars,” said Dr. Muhumba.

He explained that previously, such procedures involved opening the chest fully, but with this new technology, service delivery will be easier and patients’ recovery will be improved. “The patient who underwent the surgery is recovering well, and our specialists are closely monitoring their condition,” he added.
Dr. Muhumba emphasized that this achievement is a result of significant investment in the health sector, including training local experts, acquiring modern medical equipment, and creating a supportive and enabling work environment for healthcare professionals.
