Mpango to grace Uhuru Torch race launch in Kibaha

COAST REGION: VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Philip Mpango is set to grace launch of the National Uhuru Torch race that will take place at the Kibaha Education Centre in Kibaha town, Coast region on April 2.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Employment, Youths and Disabled), Mr Ridhiwani Kikwete during a press briefing after inspecting the grounds designated for the highly anticipated event.

“We have confirmed that our Vice-President, Dr Mpango, will be the guest of honour for this event. After launching the race, the Vice-President will hand over the torch to this year’s race leaders, who have been selected from both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar,” Mr Kikwete said.

He further explained that the appointed leaders for this year’s race will be responsible for ensuring that the Uhuru Torch visits all 31 regions in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, covering a total of 195 councils in 195 days.

Providing more details about this year’s race, the minister said that the event would include a sensitisation campaign to encourage people to exercise their democratic and constitutional rights by participating in the upcoming General Election that is scheduled for later this year.

“The leaders of the race will also focus on delivering messages aimed at promoting peace and unity in our nation. Various development projects will be inspected and launched in all 195 councils that the torch will pass through,” he added.

Coast Regional Commissioner Mr Abubakar Kunenge also said that preparations for the event were progressing well across all nine councils in the region– Kibaha Town, Bagamoyo, Kibiti, Mkuranga, Kisarawe, Kibaha District, Rufiji, Mafia and Chalinze.
