Mpango, Nchimbi lead TZ delegation to Nujoma’s burial

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA: VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Philip Mpango and Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s (CCM) Secretary General, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi yesterday arrived in Windhoek, Namibia to attend the state funeral of the Namibia’s founding father, Dr Sam Nujoma.

Dr Mpango is representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan to the funeral.

According to the statement issued by the Vice-President Office (VPO), the memorial service and the paying of last respects will take place at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek. Moreover, Dr Nchimbi is leading the party’s delegation to the burial ceremony of the Namibia’s founding father, Dr Sam Nujoma which will be held tomorrow.

He was received at Hosea Kutako International Airport by Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Namibia, Mr Caesar Waitara.

He is accompanied by the CCM’s National Executive Committee (NEC) Secretary of Politics and International Relations, Ms Rabia Abdalla Hamid, according to the statement released by the party yesterday.

“Yesterday, Dr Nchimbi participated in various activities pertaining to the paying of last respects to the late Namibian First President, Dr Nujoma as scheduled by the ruling SWAPO which has long historical relations and friendship with CCM,” the statement read in part.

The statement added: “The burial ceremony will be held at Heroes’ Acre located in Windhoek, Namibia on March 1, 2025,” read the statement.

Dr Nujoma died on February 8, this year at a hospital in Windhoek. He was 95.

The diplomatic relations between Tanzania and Namibia dates back during the liberation struggle era in which CCM and SWAPO collaborated to end colonialism.

Before gaining her independence, Namibia was known as South West Africa.

During the liberation struggle in 1960s to 1980s, Dr Nujoma and other SWAPO’s leaders once lived in Tanzania to carry out their political activities until their country’s independence in 1990.

Namibia achieved independence from South Africa in 1990 with Dr Nujoma as the first president.
