Moshi Khalsa stamp authority in Uhuru Hockey

THE high spirited Moshi Khalsa put up a stellar performance to claim this year’s Uhuru Hockey Championship in the epic finals at the Arusha Sikh Union ground over the weekend.

Newly elected Tanzania Hockey Association (THA) chairman, Kaushik Doshi told the ‘Daily News’ that, Moshi Khalsa beat the defending champion Black Mambaz of Dar es Salaam 3-1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at the normal time.

Doshi said both teams started by chasing each others’ goal but both stoppers of the both teams were alert to save may raids.

“Earlier on the same day, both teams had played their tough semifinals games in the morning and after resting for a couple of hours, the defending champions Black Mambaz and Moshi Khalsa played the final with little time for rest,” he said.

Adding, he said both teams displayed classic stick work and kept the public on their toes as to who shall win but the big turnout of Champions supporters who travelled from Moshi to cheer their team made difference.

“In penalties, Moshi Khalsa scored their goals through Varider Singh Bhamra, Sultan Kondo, Rashid Kondo, while Black Mambaz scored their consolation goal through Mark Fernandes,” he explained.

Black Mambaz had a tough semi-final task which happened to be the last year’s final against hosts Arusha Twigas before winning 5-4 on penalties after the match went to a draw in normal time.

Whereas in the other semifinal game, Moshi Khalsa was lucky to get a slim 1-0 victory over Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) of Dar.

Doshi stressed that the prestigious annual tournament was sponsored by Yadav & Sons Ltd, one of their Directors Mayanta Yadav handed over trophies to champions and runners-up and various tokens of appreciation to all the youths under the age of 12 and all the technical officials and THA officials.

The oldest player of the tournament was Onkar Singh who is 62 years old and played actively for Arusha Legends. He was also awarded.

Meanwhile, Doshi said Arusha Sikh Union Club Chairman, Monu Singh also appreciated the support rendered by the sponsors of the tournament, THA, technical officials and all the participating teams without whom the tournament would have not taken place.

Jointly organised by the Sikh Union club of Arusha and THA, the event brought together eight teams that include Kili Vijana, Tanga Stars, Arusha Legends and Zanzibar Nyuki.
