THE Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) is continuing to acquire land in order to erect poles and install an electricity line for the Standard Gauge Railway project’s second lot from Morogoro to Makutupora.
The exercise, which is currently occurring in Kilosa District of Morogoro Region, includes the relocation of approximately 80 graves to different locations.
According to TRC Telecommunications Engineer Juma Kadashi, the evaluation of those areas was done well, so the exercise of moving graves goes hand in hand with compensating relatives who lost loved ones.
Eng Kadashi also stated that the Local Government Authorities have designated special areas for the purpose of relocating graves and urged residents in the area to use the designated areas as planned in order to bring about the development of urban planning.
“The power line will transfer electricity to the SGR power stations known as Traction Power Substation (TPS), which will receive electricity of approximately 220 kilowatts (220kv), and the distance between one TPS and the other is 50 kilometres,” he explained.
Furthermore, Eng Kadashi stated that residents of the areas, as well as the local leaders, are continuing to cooperate to ensure that the exercise follows all the procedures that the TRC team has prepared.
Acting Head of the Sanitation and Environment Division from Kilosa District, Anthony Mbise, for his part, stated that the participation of health professionals in the exercise was critical in ensuring the safety of community members and preventing epidemics in those areas.
“The exercise adheres to all health procedures in order to protect people from bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause diseases through the air and even spread, so we control them and pour meds on them before the remains are removed,” he explained.
A resident of Munisagara Village, Mr Koroneli Malisali said that since the SGR project started, it has brought hope to them as development can be realised in the villages as people will have reliable means of transport of their products, they will also have modern houses through the compensation they receive as well as social services quality will be strengthened.
“Actually, we are very grateful to God since Munisagara officially became a village in 1973, we have not seen a road passing in this area, but now the SGR project is our hope to change even the standard of living,” he said
Construction of the standard gauge railway to link Tanzania with the land-linked neighbouring countries is one of the major government’s flagship projects entailed in the Third Five-Year National Development Plan 2021/22 – 2025/26 (FYDP III).
As of December 2021, construction of the piece from Morogoro – Makutupora reached 79 per cent, Mwanza – Isaka 4.27 per cent.
