MOROCCO QUAKE: President Mwinyi mourns as death toll hits 3,000

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR’s President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has sent a message of condolence to the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI following the deaths of over 3,000 people caused by a powerful earthquake.

Over 2,500 are reportedly injured due to the deadly quake which occurred in the northern part of Africa.

“On behalf of the people of Zanzibar, my heartfelt condolences to King Mohammed VI, the bereaved families and Moroccans during this difficult time. My sincere appreciation for the many individuals who are providing emergency support and rescue effort. You are in our thoughts and prayers,” Dr Mwinyi stated.

On Friday, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Morocco being the strongest quake experienced in more than 60 years and the worst destruction has been in isolated mountain areas.

The country has so far received aid from various countries including the UK, Spain, Qatar and the UAE.

King Mohammed VI ordered that a relief commission be set up to distribute aid to survivors, as global leaders have also pledged for more support.
