MOI reaps big from international collaboration

DODOMA: THE Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI) has continued to strengthen its collaboration with various international institutions through surgical camps, specialist training, research and medi- cal equipment support.

Addressing reporters in Dodoma about the institute’s achievements over the past four years under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, MOI’s Executive Director, Dr Mpoki Ulisubisya said that during the said period, the institute signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) and Tian Tan Hospital of Beijing Peking, China to advance the fields of neurosurgery and nerve surgery.

“We have also strengthened our collaboration with Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru, India, to advance the field of interventional neuro- radiology,” emphasised Dr Ulisubisya.

Expounding further, he noted that during this period, MOI signed agreements with Smart Tech Solutions from Egypt for training and treatment, with the contract finalised in 2022.

According to Dr Ulisubisya, other agreements include the 2023 collaboration between MOI and Cornell University (USA) and an- other agreement with Kairuki University, also signed in 2023, for training purposes.

Moreover, in 2024, MOI entered into an agreement with the AO Alliance Foundation (Switzerland) for research and support in pro- viding teaching materials for orthopedic and trauma treatment. That same year, an agreement was also signed between MOI and the National Institute of Transport for research purposes.

In 2025, MOI signed agreements with Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) for research, training and treat- ment, as well as with Tosamaganga Regional Referral Hospital for training and treatment.

Furthermore, the institute continues to serve as a training hospital for the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) in specialised fields such as pediatric orthopedics, neurosurgery, spinal surgery and anesthesiology.

Looking ahead, MOI plans to expand its services to underserved regions, including Tanga, Ruvuma, Kigoma, Geita, Njombe, Manyara, Mara and Kagera.
