Minister urges timely Uhuru Torch book completion

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Ms Tabia Maulid Mwita has called on the special committee compiling a 60-year history of the Uhuru Torch to ensure the project is completed on time.

The minister made the call when committee members visited her office in Migombani, Urban District–Unguja, to introduce themselves and provide an update on the project’s progress.

Ms Tabia stressed the need for accuracy and inclusivity in documenting the history, urging the committee to engage former leaders, especially those from the youth wing of ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (UVCCM), who played active roles in past Uhuru Torch relays.

“No one should be left out. Anyone who has contributed to the Uhuru Torch over the past 60 years should be consulted,” she said.

Committee Chairperson Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, a former cabinet minister, thanked Ms Tabia for her guidance, saying it would ease the team’s information gathering efforts.

Committee member and Director of Youth Development, Mr Shaib Ibrahim Mohamed, added that the book aims to preserve essential historical records and deepen public understanding of the torch’s symbolic and developmental significance.

The book, expected to be launched in October, is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities and the Zanzibar Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports.
