Minister Silaa attends Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona

BARCELONA: The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr. Jerry Silaa, is in Barcelona, Spain, attending the Mobile World Congress 2025.

The congress began on Monday and is expected to conclude today (Wednesday).

During the event, Minister Silaa participated in various discussions, including the integration of Direct to Device (D2D) connectivity in communication systems and methods of addressing frequency challenges.

He also engaged in talks regarding the improvement of management systems for the Universal Communications Service Fund (USF) across African countries, with Tanzania’s Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) highlighted as one of the best examples of transparency and success.

Another key topic was the availability of affordable frequencies, which play a significant role in promoting communication equity. Minister Silaa also participated in the National Dialogue session, Tanzania Towards a Fully Digitalized Economy, which was held alongside the conference in collaboration with the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA), the primary organizers of MWC 2025.

During the dialogue, GSMA presented an assessment report on the challenges facing the communication sector in several African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zambia, and South Africa.

Minister Silaa used the opportunity to announce Tanzania’s Digital Economy Strategy, launched on July 29, 2024, by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and urged GSMA to invite its members to join in implementing the strategy.

The Mobile World Congress 2025 brings together policymakers in the communication sector, technology innovators, mobile network operators, and researchers.

The event serves as a crucial platform for technology companies to showcase new products, including mobile phones, communication devices, and various technological solutions.
