Minister for Agriculture Mr Hussein Bashe has appointed eight members of Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA)’s Board.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Communication Unit, named the appointees as Patrick Mwalunenge, Khadija Jabr, Lilian Peter and Thobias Mwesiga.
Others are Dr Catherin Mrindoko, John Cheyo, Engineer Juma Omary Mdeke and Dr Shimo Peter.
According to the statement, the new members whose appointment started effectively from 14th March, this year, are serving their posts for a tenure of three years.
TFRA was officiated in May 2012 with the purpose of regulating the manufacturing, importation, marketing and use of fertilizer in the country.
The broad thrust of the act is to ensure that the fertilizers that farmers in Tanzania acquire for use meet the required standards.
The motives for the establishment of TFRA include protecting the farming community and the general public against health hazards associated with the use of fertilizers and fraud in marketing.
The regulator’s main activities are:
Register all fertilizer and fertilizer supplements dealers and their premises;
- b) License fertilizer dealers;
c)Issue permits for importation and exportation of fertilizer and fertilizers supplements; and
d)Implement policies, strategies, and programs relating to fertilizer industry development.
