Mgunda sets 10-goal target at Simba

DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA striker Ismail Mgunda has set his sights on scoring at least 10 league goals this season, while relishing the fierce competition for places at the club.

Mgunda said he is focused on making an impact in the league, with scoring goals his main personal target as he looks to establish himself at Simba.

“As a striker, my target is to score more goals. I want to finish among the top three scorers or even become the top scorer,” Mgunda said in an interview with Simba’s media team during the club’s training camp in South Africa.

He said his main focus is on the league, where he has set himself a target of scoring more than 10 goals, while treating goals scored in other competitions as a bonus.

Since joining Simba, Mgunda has already contributed to the team’s goals, providing the assist for Keletso Makgalwa in their emphatic 6-1 win over Mighty Wanderers in the CAF Champions League preliminary round at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Mgunda also welcomed the competition within Simba’s squad, saying it motivates players to raise their standards and can help the team achieve its targets.

“I like competition. The place where there is strong competition is the right place for me because I enjoy competing,” he said.

He added that players must respond when their teammates perform well, with every member of the squad expected to be ready when called upon.

“There are days when the team will need me and other days when it will need another player. The important thing is competition,” Mgunda said.

The striker also believes performing well for a club of Simba’s stature can open doors to further opportunities, given the attention the club receives.

“When you are at a big team like Simba and you perform well, many doors can open,” he said.

Mgunda acknowledged the pressure that comes with playing for a big club but said his focus is on managing it and concentrating on his work on the pitch.

“Pressure is something everyone has. We try to handle the pressure when we are on the pitch, as well as the pressure from fans and everything around us,” he said.
