Medical Teams International supports screening of DRC refugees in Kigoma

AS refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) flee their country for Tanzania, the Medical Teams International Tanzania, led by Dr George Mwita, Country Director, is on the ground to support the screening process in consultation with UNHCR and the Directorate of Refugee Services.

On Wednesday a total of 2,643 Congolese refugees reportedly sought refuge in Tanzania through Kigoma since May this year.

Hence, screening process is crucial to identifying and monitoring high-risk groups, such as pregnant and lactating women, under five children, newborns less than 42 days, post-natal women with less than 42 days post-delivery, elders 65 years and above, GBV cases, and patients with acute watery diarrhea.

The refugees are facing a range of challenges, including the lack of access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and shelter.

The situation is particularly dire for high-risk groups, who require specialized care and attention.

However, aid organizations are working tirelessly to address these needs and provide assistance to those in need.

Dr. George Mwita, Country Director of Medical Teams International Tanzania, stated, “We are doing everything we can to ensure that the refugees receive the care and support they need during this difficult time. Our team is working around the clock to provide medical care, distribute essential supplies, and monitor the health of high-risk groups.”

Despite the challenges, the refugees are grateful for the support they are receiving in Kigoma. “We are thankful to the aid organizations and the Tanzanian government for providing us with shelter and assistance,” said one refugee. “We hope that the conflict in our country will end soon so that we can return home and rebuild our lives.”

The situation in DRC remains unstable, and the number of refugees fleeing to Tanzania is expected to increase.

Under this circumstance, it is crucial that the international community continues to provide support to those affected by the conflict and work towards a lasting solution to the crisis.
