GOLF fraternity welcomed the Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports Mohammed Mchengerwa who on Sunday joined the club as a golfer.
Mchengerwa has become a new member of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar es Salaam and officially started learning the game while urging other Tanzanians to follow him on course.
Minister Mchengerwa was officially welcomed by the club’s Chairman Michael Luwongo and the golf captain Japhet Masai on Saturday when he was handed over a book of golf rules and later he was introduced to the trainer and professional golfer, Geoffrey Leverian.
Soon afterwards, the Minister urged Tanzanians to go at Lugalo course since it is open to everyone.
Mchengerwa who also thanked the Lugalo and golfers said: “Thank you, thank you very much Chairman. I have a lot to learn to better understand this game: I also thank you all.”
He has joined the game a day after officiating the closing ceremony of All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) that ended on Thursday at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club.
Tanzania finished third overall behind Champions South Africa and the second-placed Morocco.
He was also chief guest at the first ever NBC Lugalo Patron Trophy held at Lugalo course.
During Lugalo Patron Trophy Lugalo founder, General (rtd) George Waitara called the government’s top officials to use the opportunity of the availability of the course to conduct physical exercises.
Minister Mchengerwa has joined two other ministers who actively play golf.
Other ministers are Nape Nnauye from the Ministry of Information, Communications and Information Technology and Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Damas Ndumbaro.
Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) chairman Chris Martin was quick to compliment Minister Mchengerwa after becoming a member of golf family.
Martin said:”On behalf of the Tanzania Golf Union, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Honorable Minister Mchengerwa for his decision to join and start learning this game, it is our hope that you will attract others from the ministry. “
