MBEYA: MBEYA City delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Songea United at Sokoine Stadium, fuelling the excitement in the Championship League promotion battle.
The hosts seized control early, with Adili Buha opening the scoring in the 5th minute. Willy Mgaya doubled the lead in the 16th minute and Riphat Msuya sealed the win with a third goal in the 76th minute.
This victory propelled Mbeya City to second place, tied with Stand United at 46 points from 22 games, although goal average places Mbeya City ahead. The two trail league leaders Mtibwa Sugar, who have 54 points, by eight points.
Geita Gold sits in fourth position with 45 points, while TMA (41), Mbeya Kwanza (39) and Bigman (37) round out the top contenders.
The top two teams gain automatic promotion to the top-flight league, with the third and fourth positions competing in a playoff, making every remaining match crucial. Polisi Tanzania (27 points) and Mbuni (26 points) are currently safe from relegation, but their positions remain vulnerable.
Green Warriors (20), Kiluvya (19), Cosmopolitan (15) and African Sports (14) are also at risk.
The real battle for survival lies at the bottom, where Transit Camp (11 points) and Biashara United (4 points) face a tough fight to stay in the league.
