Mawanjeni residents press for water project completion

KILIMANJARO: RESIDENTS of Mawanjeni Village in Mwika South Ward, Moshi District, Kilimanjaro Region, have urged authorities to expedite completion of a water project, saying persistent shortages are forcing households to rely on unsafe sources and walk long distances in search of water.

The residents said the delay had prolonged their struggle to access clean and safe water, with some reporting stomach illnesses that they associate with consuming unsafe water.

Speaking during a village meeting, Mwajeni resident, Ms Anna Mallya appealed to the authorities to complete the project to ease the hardship facing households.

“We ask you to help us complete the water project so that we can overcome this challenge, because we are using water that is not safe and sometimes, we suffer from stomach illnesses,” she said.

Mwika South Ward Councillor, Mr John Tarimo, said the project, being implemented by the Moshi Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MUWSA), was 80 per cent complete.

He said the project was expected to be completed in November 2026, raising hopes that residents would soon have improved access to water.

“Water shortages were not limited to Mawanjeni Village but also affected other communities across Mwika South Ward,” he said.

He further said that completion of the project would help ease the burden on residents who struggle to obtain water for their daily needs.

With the project still under construction, residents are looking to MUWSA and other responsible authorities to complete the remaining work within the stated timeframe.

The November deadline will be a key milestone for the affected communities, which continue to face difficulties accessing safe water.

Timely completion would help address their concerns and improve access to this essential service.
