DAR ES SALAAM: FOUNTAIN GATE Head Coach Roberto Matano has confessed that he is not satisfied with his team’s defensive performances, forcing him to make numerous tactical changes in an attempt to create consistency at the back.

The Kenyan coach noted that resolving defensive flaws is a protracted process that needs patience and consistent effort on the practice field.

“This is a difficulty that will not be overcome overnight. That is why we returned to the training field to work on it. If we can’t totally eradicate the problem, we can at least reduce it. I’m also gradually implementing my tactical ideas based on the players available,” Matano said.

His remarks came after Fountain Gate returned to camp recently following a five-day break, preparing for their next Mainland Premier League match against Singida Black Stars on April 2.

Fountain Gate has struggled defensively throughout the season, conceding 40 goals in 23 matches at an average of 1.7 goals per game. Alongside KenGold, they have the worst defensive record in the league.

Offensively, the team has found the back of the net 28 times, averaging one goal per match. While the defence remains a concern, Matano has taken encouragement from the midfield, which he believes is functioning well and creating chances for the attackers.

“One of the positives is our midfield. The players in that area have developed good chemistry and they are creating opportunities for the forwards. That gives me hope for the upcoming matches,” he added.

Matano took charge of Fountain Gate on January 10, 2025, after joining from Kenyan side Sofapaka. Since his appointment, he has overseen seven league matches, winning two, drawing two, and losing three.

He replaced Mohamed Muya, who was sacked on December 29, 2024, following a 5-0 defeat to Yanga SC. Under Muya, the team played 16 league matches, winning six, drawing two and losing eight.

Furthermore, after 23 matches, Fountain Gate sit in seventh place on the table with 28 points. With a tough match ahead against Singida Black Stars, Matano will be hoping for a stronger defensive display to turn things around in the final stretch of the season.
