Mapinduzi Cup set for climax today

MAPINDUZI Cup Hockey tournament climaxes at TPDF Lugalo ground where the tournament’s semis and final matches are staged today.

Among the title favourites are Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) and Moshi Kalsa who have already qualified for the semis.

For group B, Arusha Twigas and Black Mambas Red also qualified after winning their yesterday’s games.

The three-day annual tournament organised by Tanzania Hockey Association (THA) which also serves as the National Club Championship, started yesterday at Lugalo ground in Dar es Salaam.

The field of seven top teams from different regions battle it out for the top honour.

The teams that pooled into two groups A and B, saw the last year’s finalist TPDF, who missed the last year’s title, hand Black Mambaz Blue a 4-0 blitz.

The win put them into a strong position to sail for the Sunday semifinal in the pool A which includes the defending champions, Moshi Khalsa.

TPDF had a tough schedule of the day as also were in action in the evening to face the reigning Champions.

The TPDF returned to the pitch for their second team to face Moshi Khalsa in what is likely to be a throwback to last year’s final.

When the two teams met at the Annadil Burhani ground in Tanga during the last year’s final, Moshi Khalsa defeated TPDF in a penalty shootout.

In the pool B opening match, Black Mambaz Red also started well to beat JMK Youth Park 3-0 at the same venue.

The morning battle also will see a 7-a-side  ladies mini tournament, according to THA chairman Kaushik Doshi.

Doshi said that the semi-final and final will be played today.

The tournament is jointly sponsored by Reliance Insurance Co Ltd and NAS Tyres Services Ltd.

Doshi said the winner will book a ticket to represent Tanzania in the coming Africa Club Championship.
