KALAMBO District Magistrate’s Court in Rukwa Region has sentenced a resident of Kisumba village, Ibrahim Moses alias Bura (28) to 30 years in jail for raping and impregnating a school teen girl.
The victim of the rape, a 15-year-old Form Two student was schooling at Chisenga Secondary School in the District.
Before delivering the judgement, Kalambo District Magistrate, Mr Nickson Temu noted that the prosecution side had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He described the accused as a beast that did not deserve to live in a civilised society and sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment. The sentences will run concurrently.
The prosecuting Inspector of Police, Mr Denis Chagige prayed for a deterrent sentence contending that the offence denied the victim the right to education.
Magistrate Temu appealed to family members to take necessary steps to safeguard the welfare of children and ensure that they get proper upbringing from the grassroots level and should enroll them in school.
“Some of the children were neglected forcing them to live in streets begging while others were not attending school and subsequently some of them were raped.
Investigations revealed that major perpetrators include relatives and neighbours,” explained the magistrate.
Meanwhile the same court sentenced four people, each to serve seven years in jail after being found guilty of stealing five cattle.
The four convicted people are Paul Sinyangwe (20) and Francis Cassiano (20) both from Kalepula village in Kalambo District.
Others on the list are Masanja Sita alias Luitiko (40) and James Deus (39) both from Tunduma in Songwe region.
